Education       The Milieu | Clinical Services

Our on-grounds school is approved by the Colorado Department of Education and is a California Certified Non-public School. Our school program is year round and has an extended school year. Average class size is six students. Each child's education is integrated into the total therapeutic experience. Some children are able to attend public school as part of their individual treatment plans.

Our school building is pleasant and light. The windows take advantage of the magnificent west exposure and bring the outdoors into the classroom. It is well equipped with modern learning tools, computers and other carefully selected educational materials.

Instructors provide academic instruction in mathematics, language arts, history, social studies, science, government, geography and literature. Classes in physical education, arts and crafts, woodshop and outdoor skills are part of the total therapeutic experience. Field trips are important for everyone, especially those who are just developing skills in concentration and attention span. Successful field trips fuel hope for each boy that he can reach his goals and change the course of his life.

Each child is evaluated and an individualized program is developed to meet his needs. Our intent is to prepare him to participate successfully in a suitable school program when discharged from Forest Heights Lodge.

For boys whose developmental skills are uneven, a treatment plan delineating the developmental skills that are weak and need strengthening is coordinated with both child care and educational staff. Listening skills, language development and task orientation are primary concerns during this period.

Some of the boys have learning disabilities. In addition to academic goals, we teach some very fundamental skills such as learning to analyze a task at hand, stick to it and complete it on time. They must learn to follow instructions and master appropriate interactions with peers and teachers. Each child will be helped to understand his strengths and weaknesses and learn to use compensatory tactics.

Our total school program has been developed to increase academic skills to maximum achievement, to foster each boy's ability to use free time productively and to encourage the creation of useful rewarding personal interests.
